The Universal Standard for Waveform Editing and Audio Digitization
Audacity is one of the most widely used and trusted digital audio editors in the world. Engineered to balance immediate accessibility with deep technical functionality, Audacity serves as an essential utility for audio engineers, podcasters, voiceover artists, field recordists, and mastering technicians.

Beyond everyday audio cutting and format conversion, Audacity is a powerful solution for archival audio digitization. Connect a turntable, cassette deck, or reel-to-reel machine via line-in, capture high-resolution uncompressed master audio, eliminate mechanical motor noise, normalize peak dynamics, and export indexed track markers straight into distribution formats.

Precision Sample-Level Manipulation and Non-Destructive Workflow
Audacity enables surgical edits that typical DAWs make cumbersome. Zoom directly down to the single-sample level to redraw waveform anomalies using the Pencil tool, smooth dynamic volume contours with envelope control points, and inspect harmonic distributions using the integrated multi-channel real-time spectrogram display.

Key Functional Systems:

• Multi-Channel Audio Recording:

  • Record live audio through external studio microphones, line inputs, internal system loopbacks, or USB interfaces.
  • Multi-channel synchronous tracking up to 16 discrete channels simultaneously (with multi-channel hardware).
  • Sound-activated recording mode and timed scheduled recording options.
  • Real-time pre- and post-recording peak level metering.

• Non-Destructive Editing & Timeline Tools:

  • Standard cut, copy, paste, trim, and delete functions executed with zero processing lag on large audio files.
  • Unlimited multi-level undo and redo operation history tracking.
  • Precision Envelope Tool to automate volume fades, swells, and dynamic ducking directly on track waveforms.
  • Sample-level Pencil Tool to manually redraw corrupted sample peaks and eliminate digital clicks.

• Audio Analysis & Visualization:

  • Switch tracks between standard waveform view and high-resolution Spectrogram frequency representations.
  • Integrated "Plot Spectrum" tool powered by Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) analysis for pinpoint frequency inspection.

Onboard Processing Suite:

• Pitch & Tempo Manipulation: Independent pitch shifting without altering tempo, and high-speed tempo stretching without pitch transposition.
• Dynamic Optimization: Multi-parameter compression, RMS/peak normalization, and dynamic limiting.
• Frequency Correction: Multi-band graphic equalizer, parametric curves, FFT low/high-pass filtering, and calibrated bass boost.
• Creative & Time-Based FX: High-density reverberation, stereo delay/echo, phaser, wah-wah, flanger, and reverse audio playback.
• Spectral Noise Removal: Multi-stage noise profiling to sample background room ambience and filter out air conditioning hum, fan noise, and tape hiss.

Third-Party Plugin Formats Supported:

• VST Plugins: Load 32-bit or 64-bit VST audio processing modules.
• LADSPA Modules: Native support for Linux Audio Developer's Simple Plugin API modules, including Steve Harris's classic suite.
• Nyquist DSP Language: Program or install custom algorithmic effects, generators, and audio analysis scripts.

Audio Format Interoperability:

• Uncompressed Audio: WAV, AIFF, AU, and headerless Raw PCM audio data.
• Compressed & Broadcast Formats: Ogg Vorbis, MP2, and MP3 (integrated native LAME encoding/decoding via libmad).
• Extended Libraries: Comprehensive file format support powered by libsndfile.

DSP Engine Specifications:

• Bit Resolution: 16-bit integer, 24-bit integer, 32-bit floating-point processing.
• Sample Rates: 8 kHz up to 96 kHz (and custom high-definition sample frequencies).
• Internal Resampling: High-quality sinc interpolation resampling engine with dither shaping algorithms (Triangle, Rectangular, Shaped).

Installation Steps:

1. Run the installer executable (audacity-win-4.0.0-x64.exe or the architecture matching your system: x86/ARM64) as Administrator.
2. Select your desired installation language in the installer prompt.
3. Follow the setup wizard steps and select your destination directory (default: C:\Program Files\Audacity\).
4. Complete the installation and launch Audacity.
5. The software is completely free, fully unlocked under the GPL license, and requires no activation, serials, or patches.

Configuring Audio Devices & Plugins:

• Go to Edit -> Preferences -> Audio Settings to select your Host API (MME, Windows DirectSound, or Windows WASAPI) and choose your playback/recording devices.
• To scan third-party plugins, navigate to Effect -> Plugin Manager, click Rescan, and toggle newly detected VST or LADSPA plugins to Enabled.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ):

• Q: Can Audacity record streaming audio playing from a web browser or desktop player?
A: Yes. In the Audio Setup toolbar, set the Host to Windows WASAPI and choose your primary speaker/headphone device labeled with (loopback) as the recording input.
• Q: How do I change the interface language after installation?
A: Open Edit -> Preferences -> Interface, choose your preferred language from the dropdown menu (e.g., Russian, English, German, French), and click OK.
• Q: Does Audacity 4.0 natively open proprietary formats like WMA or AAC/M4A?
A: By default, formats with proprietary licensing restrictions (WMA, AAC, M4A, AC3) require linking the optional FFmpeg shared library via Preferences -> Libraries.
